While I have to say surface is pretty cool, it doesn't touch the coolness factor of the first thread. We are talking about taking hundreds and thousands of images and piecing them together to create panoramic and 3D views of structures automatically using spacial mathematics. Surface will be really cool, but impractical for the normal user for years until the prices of the displays come down.

Yeah. Me and a co-worker were talking about the spacial mathematics technology which, like Larry said, is far more impressive than "surface" Not saying "surface" isn't cool. Just that the first link is so much more involved and complex and to take collate data from many sources to represent the actual object is too cool.

When I first saw "surface" about 3 weeks ago, the first thin I thought about was the movie "Minority Report". Given the fact that this is a first gen in type of application, I can only imagine that it will lead to a more efficient application.

Cheese, I'm thinking they have thought about the possibility of spilling beverages. My thought was cracks or breaks in the surface of the screen. Well, all I can say is it is very interesting and exciting to see this type of stuff being produced.

The oil companies will get as much profit out of oil as they can. Then after they suck that market dry, they will open their alternative energy programs up to the public (i.e. hydrogen, solar). These alternatives exist fully functional today, its just they are not used.

Petroleum is a key ingredient in plastic, among other things. To date it's been impossible to make it without it.

Not to say an alternative won't come about someday, but time keeps on ticking.

This is not true, but think as you will. All software has holes, it is just a matter of the amount of ppl and the amount of time they are willing to dedicate to finding them. Part of the reason you don't see these problems on macs and linux are due to the fact that people do not target them as they are the minority. The other part is due to the users just being more tech savvy in a lot of cases and unwilling to fall for the tricks of viruses. But this really doesn't have anything to do with this thread does it?
