<span style='font-size:14pt;line-height:100%'>Final Product</span>

<div class='bbimg'><a href='http://www.maximumgamerz.com/forums/dragon/tutorials/cutout/cutoutfinished.jpg' target='_blank'>Image</a></div>

Create a new document with whatever size you want. In this case, I am going with these settings

<div class='bbimg'><a href='http://www.maximumgamerz.com/forums/dragon/tutorials/cutout/cutout01.jpg' target='_blank'>Image</a></div>

First, press Ctrl + Shift + N to create a new layer. Photoshop is all about layers!

Name this layer Inner Circle, when the dialogue box comes up.

<div class='bbimg'><a href='http://www.maximumgamerz.com/forums/dragon/tutorials/cutout/cutout04.jpg' target='_blank'>Image</a></div>

Your Layer Pallette at the bottom right should now look like this

<div class='bbimg'><a href='http://www.maximumgamerz.com/forums/dragon/tutorials/cutout/cutout05.jpg' target='_blank'>Image</a></div>

Now we're going to outline the background image (that the letter will cut out).

Select the Elliptical Marquee tool. In this tutorial, I am using a circle, but feel free to use whatever shape fits you best.

<div class='bbimg'><a href='http://www.maximumgamerz.com/forums/dragon/tutorials/ellipticalmarquee.jpg' target='_blank'>Image</a></div>

Click and drag on your canvas to draw a shape that looks good.

<div class='bbimg'><a href='http://www.maximumgamerz.com/forums/dragon/tutorials/cutout/cutout02.jpg' target='_blank'>Image</a></div>

If you don't like what you drew, you can either press Ctrl + D and draw it again, or go to Select > Transform Selection to click and drag the appropriate boxes on your selection to move the sides.

<div class='bbimg'><a href='http://www.maximumgamerz.com/forums/dragon/tutorials/transformselection.jpg' target='_blank'>Image</a></div>

If using Transform Selection, you must accept the changes you made to your selection by clicking the checkmark at the top of your screen

<div class='bbimg'><a href='http://www.maximumgamerz.com/forums/dragon/tutorials/acceptchanges.jpg' target='_blank'>Image</a></div>

Now time to fill the shape with the color you want behind your letter. Change the foreground color to your liking by first clicking on it to bring up the color pallette

<div class='bbimg'><a href='http://www.maximumgamerz.com/forums/dragon/tutorials/foregroundcolor.jpg' target='_blank'>Image</a></div>

Now select your color...Click and drag the slider and inside the big color box to find a color you like. I'm going with this blue.

<div class='bbimg'><a href='http://www.maximumgamerz.com/forums/dragon/tutorials/cutout/cutout03.jpg' target='_blank'>Image</a></div>

Select the Paint Bucket tool

<div class='bbimg'><a href='http://www.maximumgamerz.com/forums/dragon/tutorials/paintbucket.jpg' target='_blank'>Image</a></div>

Click anywhere in your selected area on your canvas...It should fill with the color you selected. With your shape still selected, press CTRL + C then CTRL + V to copy your shape into a new layer. Double click the new layer (Layer 1) in the Layers Pallette at the bottom right, and name it Outer Ring. Your Layers Pallette should now look like this

<div class='bbimg'><a href='http://www.maximumgamerz.com/forums/dragon/tutorials/cutout/cutout06.jpg' target='_blank'>Image</a></div>

With this new layer still selected, click the Magic Wand tool

<div class='bbimg'><a href='http://www.maximumgamerz.com/forums/dragon/tutorials/magicwand.jpg' target='_blank'>Image</a></div>

Be sure the Tolerance at the top of the screen is set to zero. Now click anywhere inside your shape. It should select the entire shape, and not the white background.

Now go to Select > Modify > Contract

<div class='bbimg'><a href='http://www.maximumgamerz.com/forums/dragon/tutorials/contract.jpg' target='_blank'>Image</a></div>

Depending on the size of your shape, the amount you contract may vary. This size will be the size of the outer ring. I entered 13 pixels into the box for my example. If after you click ok, it contracts too much or too less, simply press CTRL + ALT + Z to go back. Then repeat the contract step. Press the Delete key on your keyboard. If you look at the bottom right, you will notice your new layer wont be a colored circle anymore, but instead - a ring!

Now select the Inner Circle layer at the bottom right.

Go to Select > Inverse

Press Delete on your keyboard. Assuming you've done this correctly, your Layers Pallette should now look something like this

<div class='bbimg'><a href='http://www.maximumgamerz.com/forums/dragon/tutorials/cutout/cutout07.jpg' target='_blank'>Image</a></div>

Now Go to Select > Inverse, again

And now, Select > Modify > Contract. This time we will be setting the size of the white space in between the inner circle and the ring. I went with 5 for this one.

Press Delete on your keyboard...Cross your fingers that you did everything correctly.

If you did, your current picture should look like this.

<div class='bbimg'><a href='http://www.maximumgamerz.com/forums/dragon/tutorials/cutout/cutout08.jpg' target='_blank'>Image</a></div>

If everything matches up with my pictures, select the Type tool and type the letter you want to be cut out. Change the font and size to whatever you like best.

<div class='bbimg'><a href='http://www.maximumgamerz.com/forums/dragon/tutorials/cutout/cutout09.jpg' target='_blank'>Image</a></div>

Select the Magic Wand tool

<div class='bbimg'><a href='http://www.maximumgamerz.com/forums/dragon/tutorials/magicwand.jpg' target='_blank'>Image</a></div>

Be sure the Tolerance, at the top of the screen, is 0

Click anywhere on your letter, and the entire letter should be selected (indicated by a dashing line outlining it)

Click the Inner Circle layer in your Layers Pallette, and push Delete on your keyboard. Now, right click on the letter (in the Layers Pallette) and delete it.

Your image should now look something like this.

<div class='bbimg'><a href='http://www.maximumgamerz.com/forums/dragon/tutorials/cutout/cutout10.jpg' target='_blank'>Image</a></div>

Whew, we're gettin real close now...Everything is starting to come together.

Now it's just a matter of making everything look pretty. You can stop here and you're done, if you prefer a flat, more crisp image. Or you can play around with the Blending Modes to make the logo stand out a bit more.

To do this, right click on the layer in the Layers Pallette and go to Blending Mode. Play around with those settings...You can also add an image over the letter, in addition the the circle and ring. Here is what I did, I set the Mode for my star image (over the letter) to Overlay.

Here is my final product

<div class='bbimg'><a href='http://www.maximumgamerz.com/forums/dragon/tutorials/cutout/cutoutfinished.jpg' target='_blank'>Image</a></div>

And here's one example of how it could be used.

<div class='bbimg'><a href='http://www.maximumgamerz.com/forums/dragon/tutorials/cutout/starbb03.jpg' target='_blank'>Image</a></div>

As always, if you have any questions, ask away! And if you go through this tutorial, post your result, I love to see others' work.

Hmm, weird, I can't seem to get the 'white' line in between circles. Did you happen to forget a step or two? I tried numerous times. :dunno:

Drag it and resize it over your logo and set the blending mode to overlay...this is done via a drop-down menu in the layers palette at the bottom right

You dont HAVE to use overlay, that's just what I used...Soft Light will probably give you a similiar effect, just play around with them

Two ways to get rid of those jagged edges...

1) Make your original circle and ring huuuge, and then shrink it down when you're all done
2) Before you do any filling in w/ paint bucket or deleting circles w/ the selection tool...go to Modify > Smooth...you may need to do it a few times to get rid of all jagged edges...

Your circle and ring need definition...Right click on them in the layers pallette and go to blending options, play around with stroke primarily...also the shadows and glows, possibly bevel and emboss, but dont go overboard.

Get rid of the bevel on your music note...Set the blending mode to overlay like I described earlier - this will make it look like it is actually part of the logo, not just added on top

If you dont like that, you can also cut it out of the background circle (like I did with my S)...to do that...shift (i think, if not, it's control) + click on the small box of the musical note layer in the layers pallette...this should select the music note...with the note still selected on the canvas, select the circle layer in your layers pallete...press the delete key...this will help make it look like your note was integrated, not just thrown on top

That's all I got for now, I gotta go grab some food and get to work soon...play around, lemme know if something doesnt make sense or you need more help
